Gallery #5 September 2007 Update

Some 2007 Lambs, Dams, and Sires

Woodland Creek Black and White Family Group

Blue Mountain Thumper '00 and her '07 ewe lamb Woodland Creek Cricket, her '02 lamb Blackhorse Bunny and Bunny's '07 ram lamb Chilcoot.

Thumper and her offspring have formed one core group of our 3 separate sources of foundation stock for our Black and White NA Soay group here at Woodland Creek. We own (or owned) Thumper, her ewe lambs Bunny '02 and Kaya '05, her ram lambs Thor '05 and Pepper '06, Bunny's ram lambs Obsidian '06 and Chilcoot '07. All but Bunny are self-colored blacks with white spotting either showing or hidden. Photo 07-Sep-07.

Woodland Creek Raven - ewe '07

Raven is a self-colored black NA Soay ewe with white spotting at the poll. Her dam is Teed's Aja, a polled self-colored black with a tiny wisp of white at the poll. Her sire is Woodland Creek Pepper '06, one of our self-colored black rams with a white poll spot.

Woodland Creek Chilcoot - r '07

Chilcoot is a very beautiful self-colored black NA Soay ram with a great white head "shield". His dam is Blackhorse (incorrectly registered as Blue Mountain) Bunny, a mouflon-pattern Soay with hidden black from her dam, Thumper. Chilcoot's sire is Woodland Creek Pepper '07. September 2007 photo.

Woodland Creek Pepper - ram '06

Not a 2007 lamb, but the sire of most of our 2007 Black and White Soays. He is getting a gorgeous mane and nice horns. For some unknown reason his white poll spot stays bright white and clean, unlike many of our poll spot Black and Whites. September 2007 photo.

Woodland Creek Molly - ewe '07

Molly is unusual in both her genotype and her phenotype (appearance). Her dam is Mock's Esperanza - a light phase mouflon pattern NA Soay with a white blaze (A+/A? Bb/Bb Ss/Ss). Her sire Pepper (shown above), in genetic contrast, is self-colored black with white spotting (Aa/Aa BB/BB? Ss/Ss). Accordingly, she must be heterozygous for both agouti and coat phase at the brown locus (unless by unlikely circumstances Pepper is carrying light phase brown hidden).

Woodland Creek Saratoga - ewe '07 scurred or polled

Saratoga is pretty strong proof, to me, that the lighter NA Soays in our flock are indeed genetically homozygous recessive for light phase at the Brown locus (Bb/Bb). Her dam is Jurpik's Frosty '05, and her sire is Woodland Creek Chico '06. Although our light phase NA Soays don't have exactly the same appearance as light phase RBST Soays, I believe it is due to the much greater pheomelanin (reddish-brown) pigment in the NA Soays in general, although Saratoga doesn't seem to have much at all, thus is a flat gray-brown.

Teed's Sadie '07

Sadie was a bottle lamb that I couldn't resist. She (obviously) has considerable white spotting, and is standard dark phase mouflon pattern. She is from a wild flock so of unknown parentage.

Woodland Creek Shoshone - ram '07

Shoshone is a self-black NA Soay with just a few white hairs at his poll. His dam is Teed's Cinnamon, and his sire is WC Pepper '06.  Both are self-colored blacks with white spotting. Shoshone is Aa/Aa BB/BB? Ss/Ss

Blue Mountain Orca - ram '07

Orca was a bottle lamb from Blue Mountain Velvet, a venerable old self-colored black NA Soay ewe, and Skylonda Viking - a young upstart self-colored black ram. Orca is Aa/Aa BB/BB? Ss/Ss - a very nice "Black and White" Soay.

Woodland Creek Cherokee - ram '07

Cherokee was a surprise self-colored black ram. His dam Happy Valley Maddie is a mouflon pattern and was not known to be carrying the self-colored gene. Cherokee's sire is Deer Park Hjemsted's Thor, a self-colored black son of Thumper.

Page's Diablo '05

Diablo is a self-colored black NA Soay that has a 50% chance that he could be carrying white spotting, as this year his dam (Massena's Bonita) produced a white-spotted lamb, proving she has the white spotting gene.
